Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956) was a Russian photographer, painter, and graphic designer. Several of his posters have already been featured on the Blini for Propaganda Poster Sunday, including the vaguely creepy “better pacifiers.” This week we’ll be looking at some of his photography, the medium for which he is best known.

Red Flag by unknown author

Lyrics (again, Google translate, sorry)

Tears filled the vast world,
Our whole life – hard work,
But the day will come the inevitable.
Relentlessly terrible judgment!
Refrain: So far, our tune, carries around
The world as our banner flies
And bears cry struggle, revenge thunder
Sows the seed of the future.
It burns brightly red-
That’s our blood burns with fire,
That the blood of workers on it!
Courage, my friends! Come together,
Hand in hand, and one thought.
Who can tell the storm: stand still!
Whose power in the world is so strong?
Refrain
Down with the tyrants! Off the shackles!
No need to slave shackles of oppression.
We point out a new way to the ground,
Lord of the world will work!
Refrain

Our Locomotive

Our Locomotive by B. Skorbin

Lyrics

We are the children of those who advanced
On the White detachments
Let off by locomotives
On their way to the barricades.
Refrain: Our locomotive, fly forward!
At the commune is a station.
We have no other way,
In our hands is a rifle.
Among us are children, sons
Who went together with their fathers.
To the enemies we’ll send our shell,
Our grief united with vengeance.
Refrain
And in our workers’ depths,
We hammer, shave, and hew,
Not sparing ourselves:
We love factory work.
Refrain
Our locomotive will set on its way
Such as we need.
And just let a front spring up,
We’ll to go beat the enemies quick.
